Chicken Achar Gosht
is a delicious and tangy Pakistani and Indian curry dish made with chicken and pickling spices. The word "achar" refers to pickles, and the spices used in this dish are reminiscent of the flavors found in traditional South Asian pickles. Here's a simple recipe to make Chicken Achar Gosht:
- Ingredients:
- - 500g boneless chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces
- - 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- - 1 large onion, finely chopped
- - 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced
- - 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- - 2 tomatoes, chopped
- - 2 tablespoons yogurt
- - 1 tablespoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
- - 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- - 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- - 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- - 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds (methi seeds)
- - 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- - 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
- - 1/2 teaspoon nigella seeds (kalonji)
- - 2-3 green chilies, slit
- - Salt to taste
- - Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
- - Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions:
1. Dry roast the fenugreek seeds, mustard seeds, fennel seeds, and nigella seeds in a pan over low heat for about a minute or until they release their aroma. Let them cool down and then grind them into a fine powder. This is your pickling spice mix.
2. In a large pot or deep pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
3. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the onions, and cook for another minute until the raw smell disappears.
4. Now, add the chicken pieces to the pot and cook until they turn white and are seared on all sides.
5. Mix in the chopped tomatoes, yogurt, red chili powder, turmeric powder, ground coriander, ground cumin, and the pickling spice mix (from step 1). Stir well to coat the chicken evenly with the spices.
6. Add the slit green chilies and salt to taste. Stir again, cover the pot, and let the chicken cook on medium-low heat for about 15-20 minutes or until the chicken is tender and fully cooked. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the bottom.
7. Once the chicken is cooked, check the seasoning and adjust salt and spices if needed.
8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice, naan, or roti. You can also squeeze some lemon juice over the dish before serving for an extra tangy flavor.
Enjoy your flavorful and aromatic Chicken Achar Gosht!
